Cardiganshire

Carmarthenshire

Abercastle to Lydstep -  Pembrokeshire  1

Maenclochog to Yerbeston - Pembrokeshire  2

Listed in this section are the more common place names in Cardigan, Carmarthen and Pembrokeshire, the three areas which together are known as Dyfed.

The lists show:

  • names, associated with the parishes in existence at the beginning of the 19th century

  • the civil registration districts for the 1851 to 1891 census returns

  • Ordnance Survey grid references

It is generally believed that the registration counties were the same as the administrative counties but this was not always the case. For example there were six registration districts in Cardiganshire; two thirds of one was in Pembrokeshire and half of two others were in Carmarthenshire.

Some parishes in Montgomeryshire, Brecknock and Glamorgan, are included in districts of Dyfed but are not listed here. To further complicate matters spellings varied greatly and care has to be taken in their interpretation.
