Major Francis Jones (1908 - 1993)

CVO., TD., DL., FSA., MA., KStJ

Late Wales Herald ExtrAOrdinary

THE Author’s achievements are summed up by Sir Anthony Wagner, KCB, KCVO, late Garter King of Arms, in the Foreword of a book dedicated to Major Jones: “To lead in a special field of knowledge is a great, but not inordinately rare distinction. But to conquer for oneself from scratch a whole such field is rarer; and this is what Francis Jones has done for Welsh Heraldry and family history. As an old friend, may I perhaps be allowed to say how, in himself no less than in his work, Francis seems to embody and transmit that peculiar charm and excellence of the immortal Welsh heraldic tradition which he so worthily represents.”   March 1974

The Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal and Head of the College of Arms, wrote:

“Francis Jones, Wales Herald at Arms, was under my cousin Bernard’s command and mine for over thirty years. In both ceremonial and executive duties it was obvious we had a man of talent and quality. Francis was commissioned into the army in 1931, and held appointments to the Crown until his death in 1993. A total of sixty-two years of service.”  February 1998
